Dear Calvary Family,
As you are aware, we were trying to plan an annual meeting to be held on Zoom on Sunday, January 31. At the meeting of our Western Suffolk Conference on January 7, I learned that with one exception of a relatively small congregation, the conference congregations present are all planning to postpone their annual meetings. Present at the meeting were our Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Chris Mietlowski, and Metropolitan New York Synod (MNYS) Secretary, Pastor Bob Schoepflin, both of whom understand the rules governing the synod.
It was explained that due to the pandemic it is acceptable to postpone the annual meetings of congregations. The synod does not want members gathering in-person for such a prolonged meeting and there are complications with running that kind of meeting with parliamentary procedures and voting in a Zoom setting.
Precedent was set last year when the MNYS Annual Assembly could not meet. That meeting had to be postponed for over a year and the synod budget was adopted by the Synod Council. Therefore, congregations are permitted to follow suit.
At our council meeting on Tuesday, January 12, the council voted to postpone the meeting until no later than the end of June 2021 (we anticipate meeting when we can meet outside or if we can safely meet in-person indoors, whichever comes first).
We are grateful for your continued dedication, faithfulness, and support,
Pastor Laurie, Interim Pastor
